Water Leak Detection Tips

Check the water meter

Start by turning off all the water in the building, then check the outside water meter. It should not be registering.  Wait about 30 to 40 minutes (without using any water) and check the meter again. It should read the same as before, if not more investigation is necessary.

To narrow down the location of the leak, turn off the main shut off valve to the house. If the dial within the water meter has stopped registering, the leak is probably inside the building, instead of between the main shut off and meter.

Check the toilets

Toilets are the leading cause of water leaks. The internal components break down over time and end up wasting a significant amount of water.

Listen for any hissing sounds coming from the toilet, it is a sure sign of a leak. If not, take the lid off the tank and place a couple of drops of food color in the water. Wait a couple of minutes and check the bowl. If the water in the bowl has changed colors, there is a leak.

Check other leak points

Check all exposed pipes and hoses, such as under the sinks and behind the washing machine. Listen for any hissing sounds when water using appliances are turned off, look for any unusual warm areas on the floor, and an unusual water bill.
