Water pipe corrosion has become a major issue in the Orlando and Atlanta area, resulting in pinhole water leaks. Insurance adjusters receive many phone calls from the effects of these types of leaks, but by the time a home or business owner notices the damage, the water has been probably leaking for some time.
Over time, water pipes fall victim to rust, corrosion, age and weather. Corrosion occurs when acids found in water produce pits in the pipes, which eventually turn into pinhole size leaks.
Unfortunately corrosion and pinhole leaks can go unnoticed and cause significant damage. Slow dripping water between walls can make the perfect environment for bacteria, mildew and mold to grow. Eventually, it can even lead to discolored water, low water pressure and even loss of water.
If these leaks occur in pipes under the ground or in a concrete slab, not only do they waste water, one of our most precious resources, they can be devastating to your home or business. Causing damage to the structure, floors, yard, landscaping to health issues such as allergies, respiratory even headaches.
Pinhole Leaks
A study done by the State of Maryland Task Force on Pinhole Leaks in Copper Plumbing defines a pinhole leak as, “the perforation of copper tube, pipe or fittings used for domestic water distribution as the result of pitting corrosion initiated on the interior/waterside surface with the subsequent leakage of water.”
The chemistry of the water going through the pipes is what usually causes pitting corrosion, which is the localized erosion that leads to small pinhole leaks in metal. Water Velocity also plays a role. If the water pressure is too high for the copper tubing it can erode the protective shielding, creating unprotected copper. This is more evident where the pipes are at tees and elbows, the location where the water changes direction.
Unfortunately, the deterioration of our water pipes is inevitable. According to a recent study, 90% of water leaks and plumbing problems can be detected before they happen. Consider having your plumbing system annually inspected, it can save you thousands of dollars in damages.
